How Can I Promote My Website on Google on My Own?
Whether you are building a new website or improving an existing one, this is how you can promote your site on Google in a simple and practical way.
From my marketing consulting work with small businesses, a clear need emerges: business owners want to understand how to improve their website’s visibility on Google through organic promotion (SEO), even independently. This article provides a clear and straightforward explanation of the basic steps involved.
The Importance of Keyword Research
To appear on the first pages of Google, it is essential to understand which search terms people actually use. Keyword research helps identify relevant terms and integrate them into your content, so Google can expose your website to the right search queries.
Using Google Keyword Planner
This tool is free and available through Google Ads (it requires setting up an initial campaign, but there is no need to activate it).
Start by entering several core keyword ideas related to your field. The tool will then suggest additional search terms, along with data such as average search volume and competition level. Pay special attention to long-tail keywords – more specific phrases that are usually less competitive. Select keywords that best match your content and business goals (additional free or paid tools can also be used if needed).
In addition, it is recommended to complement the research by reviewing leading competitor websites. This helps you understand how the market communicates in practice: which terms are emphasized in headlines, which words appear in the main content, and how pages are structured. The advantage of this approach is that it relies on websites Google has already chosen to rank. Combining tool-based data with competitor insights provides a more accurate picture of relevant search terms.
Integrating Keywords into Your Website
Integrate the selected keywords into page headlines (such as H1 for the main headline and H2 for subheadings), meta descriptions (the short texts shown in search results), and image alt text. Avoid overloading pages with keywords, as this can harm user experience and may lead to penalties from Google.
A Live and Updated Website Signals Relevance to Google
Google is cautious about displaying inactive websites. Updating your site several times a year – for example, three to four times annually – helps signal that it is active. Adding blog posts, articles, or an FAQ section helps keep the content fresh.
User Experience
Good user experience is important both for website visitors (clear content, messaging, and conversion paths) and for SEO. Make sure your website is easy to navigate, mobile-friendly, and loads quickly. Avoid broken links.
Links from Trusted Websites
Links from reputable websites or relevant directories can still contribute to your site’s credibility. This is not a primary ranking factor today, but it can still help.
By following these steps, you can improve your website’s visibility on Google. In the future, I will also share information about adapting websites to the world of artificial intelligence.
